JOIN THE HIGH-TECH RE-INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.
REINDUSTRIALIZE UK, IS A CAMPAIGN TO URGENTLY HYPERSCALE THE BRITISH MANUFACTURING BASE. FOR PROSPERTY & DEFENCE.
Painting: [A Smyth steam hammer at work] / by artist-engineer, James Nasmyth (1808-1890), 1871. Inside a Manchester foundry works, the large steam hammer is shaping a massive iron bar before it can be rolled onto a plate.
IT’S TIME:
It’s time to reindustrialize the UK.
WHY:
The challenges facing our nation are existential and demand the hyperscaling of our industrial base. The top reasons include:
Cold War 2.0: Geopolitical pressure from highly industrialized adversaries demands readiness. We cannot currently sustain prolonged strategic competition or support our allies.
A Crisis of Purpose: Many British youth are adrift in an economy overly reliant on the service sector. Large-scale industrial projects require a skilled workforce and offer a clear purpose—ideal for engaging and empowering young people.
Economic Volatility: Supply chain shocks in energy and goods drive inflation, destabilizing politics, discouraging investment, and leaving us vulnerable to exploitation by adversaries.
Legacy for the Next Generation: Our children’s future depends on the choices we make now.
HOW:
Sam Bidwell of the ASI provides a detailed explanation, but key actions must include:
Energy Security and Affordability: Collapsing industrial energy costs is critical. High energy prices cripple our ability to build factories and data centres. Implementing zonal pricing and behind-the-meter generation via micro-grids is the fastest and most sustainable solution.
Planning Reform: Investing in and constructing new infrastructure must be fast and viable. Current planning constraints are a strategic bottleneck.
AI, Robotics & Skills: These are labour-force multipliers. Scaling their deployment alongside newly skilled workers will enable us to compete in ways previously impossible, while creating meaningful, high-paying jobs. The UK missed the internet revolution; it cannot afford to miss the AI and robotics revolution.
Innovators:
We must ignite and fund a dynamic ecosystem of entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors ready to tackle the challenge of reindustrialization. These trailblazers must embrace the mission to transform Britain into the workshop of the solar system.
WHAT:
While the free market should determine specifics, two industrial focuses are essential:
Weapons Manufacturing: From artillery shells to drones and autonomous weapon systems, we must ensure our defence industry is robust and self-reliant.
Space Hardware: The UK is uniquely positioned in this sector. We already host the European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT), produce more small satellites in Glasgow than anywhere else in Europe, and have two operational rocket launch pads in Scotland, with more under construction. Britain was a dominant seafaring nation; we can become a dominant space-faring nation.
